The stay
Two master suites, and nobody fighting over a bathroom
Four bedrooms across two levels, and two of them are proper master suites with their own bathrooms. That solves the argument most eight-person houses start: couples get their own space, and the rest of the group is not queuing.
Upstairs is one open room under a vaulted ceiling, with a wall of windows at the far end and a stone fireplace in the middle of it. The kitchen sits at one end and the deck door at the other, so cooking, eating, and sitting by the fire all happen in the same conversation.
The view
Farmland, river, and weather you can watch arrive
The house sits near the top of the ridge, so the view runs out over rolling farmland to the Shenandoah River rather than into the next hillside. Morning fog settles in the valley and burns off while you are still on your first coffee. It is the reason people book, and the reason they come back.

A tournament poker table that seats ten, an electronic dartboard, a foosball table, and an indoor putting green, all in one room with a big TV and a sectional. There is a spin bike and a workspace down there too, for whoever wakes up before everyone else.

Hot tub, fire pit, and a deck that runs the length of it
The hot tub faces the valley, the grill is on the upper deck, and there is a fire pit out back with Adirondack chairs and cornhole on the lawn. In summer the deck is where the evening happens. In winter it is the fire pit, and the view gets sharper once the leaves are down.

The area
Front Royal, and the park behind it
Front Royal is the northern gateway to Shenandoah National Park, which puts Skyline Drive and the first stretch of the Appalachian Trail a short drive from the door. The town calls itself the canoe capital of Virginia and means it: the Shenandoah River runs through it, with outfitters running float trips all summer.
Downtown is close by for groceries, restaurants, coffee, and a growing run of wineries and breweries. Dulles is about an hour and fifteen out, which makes this an easy weekend from DC without feeling anywhere near it.
